Coralville continues to plan for Costco store
CORALVILLE – Coralville continues to plan for a Costco Wholesale Warehouse to come to town.
The City Council on July 12 is to hold a public hearing and first consideration on a plan to designate the land at 2900 Heartland Dr. as general commercial in place of general industrial. The council’s meeting agenda says the site is the location for a proposed Costco.
The property is north of Interstate 80 in an area that is already home to a Wal-Mart and other retailers.
Costco is a membership retail chain known for selling products in bulk at low prices.
Costco has yet to officially acknowledge it will open a Coralville store, but the City Council’s pending action is another sign that one is coming. Costco and Coralville officials did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment Friday.
SourceMedia Group reported in March that Costco was interested in the location.
Also, Jackson Dean Construction of Seattle has requested bids for the project that call for building construction to begin July 15 and be finished Nov. 12.
The plans, which have been updated since last month, call for a 159,341-square-foot store to be created by the renovation of two existing shell buildings, and a covered parking garage with 617 spaces.
The 24.7-acre site on Heartland Drive was formerly used as a distribution facility by Amana Refrigeration and is known as the Amana warehouse.
Costco is headquartered in Washington state. Its only existing Iowa store is in West Des Moines.
Costco currently has 584 warehouses worldwide, with plans to open eight more by the end of August, according to a June sales report released Thursday.
